SITE OF THE WOUNDED KNEE MASSACRE

It was a privilege today to visit this sacred site on the Pine Ridge Reservation, and I was enlightened by the experience. Wounded Knee is a very sad part of American history and one that should not be forgotten. We have forgotten a glorious people whose lives are still gravely affected by the events that occurred at Wounded Knee in 1890.

(Please note that it is usually unacceptable to take photographs of an Indian burial site, and I would never violate that, however, there was an Indian there today who said it was okay.)

It's a long drive through the South Dakota Badlands
to get to Wounded Knee.
Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
This is the exact spot where the massacre occurred.
There isn't much to mark it - only this sign
and a small graveyard near the sign.
I really don't know who would be so rude
to graffiti-up this historic marker.
Wounded Knee Creek - where a lot of the Indians
ran to get away from the U.S. 7th Cavalry
This is a very small, unkept graveyard. The monument
in the middle lists the names of all the dead Indians.
It also serves as a regular cemetery.
The area in front of the cemetery is where
the massacre occurred.
